The Companions The Sundering Book I R A Salvatore 9780786963713 Books

Let me establish where my thoughts were going into this new series. I love the Drizzt saga and always devour the books as they come out. That being said, The Ghost King was very weak and I had mixed feelings about the events that unfolded from that point on. This was mostly due to Drizzt's new companions and I kept thinking to myself as I read the most recent books that it just wasn't the same. Even when the books were good (and they were) they just weren't quite the same. However, all of my uneasiness with the Neverwinter series and the new companions only served to make the ending climax of the Last Threshold far more moving than it would have been otherwise.

And this book absolutely blows that ending out of the water. Salvatore has definitely built up very nicely to this book and I'm sure that any of the readers who have been with Drizzt and the Companions for many years will enjoy this new turn in the series. I honestly can't express how excited I am for the next book.

I also want to point out that several of the lower star reviews are by people who admittedly have not read any Drizzt books before. This tale is definitely tailored to those who have dedicated many years to following Drizzt and who can ride the emotional roller coaster that Salvatore has been building up to with the Neverwinter series.

The Companions The Sundering Book I R A Salvatore 9780786963713 Books Reviews

The world is changing. That is the theme of The Sundering, the new series from Forgotten Realms. In this six book series the writers promise us new and world changing events. The first novel in this series is The Companions by R. A. Salvatore. As a fan of the Drizzt series of novels I was very excited when I saw this title.

First with The Dragon King and then in Gauntlgrym the friends of Drizzt knows as The Companions of the Hall died. It was heartbreaking to lose these characters. In the following three books Drizzt spends his time trying to come to grips with his loss and move on. Little did we know that something this special and amazing was in store.

There are so many surprises and changes in this book that it is hard to review. I don’t want to spoil any of the surprises. Let us just say that we get to see our favorite companions again. They have been sent back with a mission. They must help Drizzt in his greatest struggle. Their path back will be strange. It will be dangerous. As they move through the challenges before them they grow and mature in new and powerful ways.

Salvatore uses this book to really develop the characters of the Companions. After reading this book I can’t wait to see how the story continues. To avoid spoiling the story I won’t say much about the plot. I will say that this is one of Salvatore’s best novels to date and it made me laugh, it made my cry, and it left me wanting more. If you are a fan of the Drizzt novels then I suggest you buy this book now.
I love where this book is heading with the Companions, and this book was well written and thoroughly enjoyable to read. I felt like there was a lot more substance to this book, and someone must've told Salvatore that while his fight scenes are always awesomely detailed, they can seriously drag to the point of tedium, because in this book the fight scenes felt just right. Not too long, still awesome, and engaging.

So why the 4 stars instead of 5? It's the silly secrecy. Why in the world do all these characters separately come to conclude that they need to keep their true identities secret? Something about "endangering the mission," but honestly that makes no sense. If any of them had made their identity known to old allies, the ability to get to the appointed meeting place would have been made so much easier. Why trek through the spine of the world in winter when Mithril Hall's wizards would just send you along, or even Citadel Feldbarr's for that matter? Why not tell the Harpell's? Or Jarlaxle, who would've so happily dropped whatever he was doing just so he could be there and join them. By the way, where is Athrogate? I need some Bwahaha's). I hate obviously flawed logic, and to me Bruenor and Cattie-Bree (who actually did tell her enemies her true identity, but not her friends) were operating under obviously flawed logic. At least provide a reasonable explanation that can explain it away if it's inconvenient for the story and make sure it's explained well to the reader.

Other then that, great book.
Ok, before you read any further . . . Have you read ALL of the Drizzt novels? Not the prequels, necessarily, but from Crystal Shard forward? If not, this book will only be slightly awesome.

If you HAVE read all the Drizzt novels, this may be the best book you've read in the last 4-5 years.

It is the ultimate pay off, of friendship, love and loyalty. This is not a spoiler review but, suffice to say, it puts all of the Companions of Mithril Hall in a new light and gives each their due as to where they're at currently and context to where they have been.

More importantly, if you have been depressed and despondent about the misery Drizzt has been through, I can tell you this . . . It was all for a reason!

READ THIS BOOK!

Bob Salvatore is a master of his craft and this story shows how he can weave all characters, past and present, back together into a coherent tapestry that will amaze you!

PS the end will make you misty, you've been warned!
There might be spoilers for anyone who hasn't read the last book or two preceding this, so this is your fair warning.

This book was great. It serves as a reset for the series and takes you through the lives of the reborn companions. This is a great idea. While the original characters are awesome, we have become accustomed to them. We know their strengths and weakness'. They all get a new start in life and develop new abilities, powers, and outlooks. It lets us experience the same old friends we've know, but removes a lot of the stagnation of knowing how they'll react. This is really great to see and I really enjoyed this book.
