Half Broken Things A Novel Morag Joss Books

This is an artfully composed book about 3 outcasts coming together to create an ersatz family, including a borrowed baby, in an English country manor. The narration shifts around, to good effect, and there are some lovely passages, as well as memories befitting the intellectual limits of the teller. The clock is ticking against the dangerous fiction our protagonists are living. Despite all, the ending is disarmingly benign. The characters see themselves as better than the world has — not as victims or losers, but as people getting better by dint of their invented family. All other people, the citizens of the outside world, are heartless, dishonest, selfish and vain. They deserve what they get. Why don’t the rest just go away?

Half Broken Things A Novel Morag Joss Books Reviews

One of the best novels I've ever read. The characters and story stay with you.
'Half Broken Things' was highly readable all the way through, because, as well as being well written, it leaves one wondering almost right from the start just how such a messy situation will finally end. Basically this crime novel is more about feelings, obtaining love and security within a family and family values than about the very sinister crimes being committed within its pages. Three people who have had unsatisfactory verbally or physically abusive childhood upbringings bind themselves together into a contented family unit, living out all their dreams of what a peaceful existence with love and support should be. They even manage to secure a baby to complete their picture of a happy family. No matter that this new lifestyle is based on lies and felonious actions, they have all finally found a type of security and contentment. They each achieve this by blocking out the fact that nothing of the sort can last, not when it is based on stealing and deceit. But so long as no-one comes along to discover their new, fabricated identities, all will be well. Of course the reader soon realises that this has to be impossible, and this is what makes the book such an absorbing read.
I read this years ago and it was so beautifully written I was always searching for something similarly subtle and human. Re-reading it, just as good a 2nd time.
As a first time customer of , I was very impressed with both the items I recieved as well as the speed of delivery. I ordered multiple copies of the novel, "Half Broken Things" to give as Christmas gifts to friends and family. I had read this wonderful novel in 2005, the year it was published, and had always planned on sharing it with others. The copies were as clean and in as wonderful condition as advertised; the service was quick. I would recommend both the book and to others.
While I usually read action-packed thrillers, I was rather pleased with this selection that I picked up from the mystery section of my local bookstore. The story isn't overly intense, especially in the beginning which has some slow parts, but for some reason I just couldn't stop thinking about the characters after I'd set the book down. While some of the material is disturbing, it is incredibly mild compared to other popular works (James Patterson, Dean Koontz, Stephen King, etc.). While I initially thought it unlikely, Morag Joss got me to sympathize and relate to the twisted characters who take their obsession with belonging a little too far. This is one of those rare books that has to sink in for awhile before you actually can appreciate its cleverness.

BOTTOM LINE If you like thrillers that keep you up all night with page-turning action and suspense, this isn't going to be the book for you. The suspense is much more subtle in this novel and might not be enough to keep you reading if you're easily bored. However, if you're someone who enjoys bigger-than-life-but-slightly-wacko characters, you won't be disappointed. You could certainly do much worse than this original and slightly disturbing narrative.
I flat-out adored this book. Spectacularly well written and truly original plot. All characters not only were well developed but literally grew into each other and the plot. I don't expect to find such a wonderful book for a very long time.
Half Broken Things got under my skin. Extremely well written, it unfolds quietly but creates a feeling of relentless anxiety. The main character is an aging, single woman on her last house sitting job before she will be forced to retire. At first she seems simply prickly and self-important, but over time her calm, straight-forward descriptions of more and more unsettling events reveal something more sinister. The tension became so great I stopped reading it only to pick it up again to find out what happens. The book feels like a slow-motion, psychological car crash. Eventually, I felt compelled to finish the book and although the conclusion fits like a puzzle piece into the plot line, it still managed to surprise -- and disturb me.
