This is the first book by Gibson, and there is some evidence of that. However, it also stands up as a fascinating and comprehensive tale of two strong women who are very different, and yet similar in their attraction to one another, and their will to change the world for the better.

Claire Avondale is a Senator in the US Government. Well, at least as far as the public knows. However, she also has a secret identity as Dr Claire Avondale, a research scientist developing gene technology to heal errors in human DNA.

Claire has been solving chemistry problems from the age of 7. Her genius was fostered by her loving parents, and supported by their vast wealth. She knows the CIA wants access to her work, and will go to great lengths to get it. As a result she declines the offer of protection from the Secret Service, and pays for her own security.

Now that Claire is being targeting by a violent religious group as well as the CIA, she needs even better protection and a new security specialist.

Kit Witmer was a rising star in the Secret Service, protecting Senators and officials until a protection detail goes very wrong. The guilt from this episode caused Kit to bail out of the service, and as far out of life as she could go. A drunk for three years, she crashes from job to job, finding just enough income and booze to stay alive.

Recommended for the high profile security of Senator Avondale by a mutual friend, Kit realizes she has to clean up her act. Getting sober is a big enough hurdle to overcome, but a more difficult job might be managing her growing attraction to the Senator.

This is a complex thriller about the potential developments in gene therapy, and the impact this might have on the individuals involved. It also has a slow burn romance between the two leads.

There is a lot to like about this book, and I can see why other readers gave it 5 stars. However, there were problems with the book too, so I think 4 stars is a better gauge of its readability.

This is a long book, and the length of it gives Gibson the room to really develop the characters, which I really liked. It allowed me to get to know them at a deeper level than I might have with a shorter book. It also allowed the author to develop a more complex storyline, which worked with the scale of the drama unfolding.

The author switches from the perspectives of both of the main characters, which gives us the opportunity to see the world from each of their viewpoints. There is also occasionally some overlap of particular events, which can be interesting too, as it amplified the differences between them as we saw the same even through both perspectives.

Both main characters are well drawn. Having the luxury of the room to develop a slow burn romance between them helps with the unresolved sexual tension in the first part of the book. Claire is definitely the genius chemist, very focused on her work and diligent about her safety. Kit is a loose canon, extremely capable and yet also has a fragility that threatens to undo her when pushed emotionally.

As a romance, the slow burn was great. Gibson did a good job of building the romantic elements in the book, and there was a lot of sexual tension which was fun to read. I did think the falling in love bit happened very fast though, and that stretched credulity a bit. From then on it was more about balancing the needs of the thriller with the needs of the love story.

The thriller aspects of the book were very creative, and had some clever moments. I gave the book an extra 1/2 star for this.. However, there was a fundamental flaw evident in the lack of research by the author into protection details, and this meant that the book felt less real as a result. The idea that an expert can suddenly become a fantastic bodyguard after three years of being drunk, with no training physically or mentally, defies belief. In addition, the core premise of the book is that a super smart person, and a great ex-agent, would think getting involved could provide good protection for the client, which is patently absurd. And if there are that many people after the Senator, why is no one else pulled in to assist in her protection? These flaws in logic made what could have been a tight and fantastic thriller move more into the fantasy realm. I like fantasy, but more realism in some of those aspects would have been great.

So in order to enjoy the book for what it was, I had to let go of those fundamental flaws in the plot. Once that was done, I was free to enjoy this as an adventure, with interesting characters and a clever and complex plot. It was very imaginative, and a lot of fun to spend so much time with the characters.

Action, suspense, intrigue, romance and love. Great characters, really knew their feelings and what made them the way they are. Only had to put down for work. Would of given it a 5/5 but there was a few too many misspellings​. Overall loved it. Keep them coming Sydney!
Amazing Story!!!....Honestly one of the best books I have read recently. The emotions are so compelling. They have you going back and forth the entire book. The action and storyline is so heart pounding. It makes you feel what these characters are dealing with. Love, rage, pain, fear, hurt, sorrow, regret, sincerity, trust, and forgiveness...all emotions you will feel when reading this book. I didn't want to put the book down, but I forced myself to read over a number of days just because of the length of the book. I couldn't wait to pick up where I left of everyday until I finished. Wow!...I can't say enough. I wish there was more. Definitely worth the read.
While I too am not a fan of science fiction, I was thrilled that this book was longer than the "favorite" 240 pages that so many authors seem to write. I've gotten to the point that I will not pay $9.99 or more for so few pages. I did like the story however, as an English major, the author really needs to have some or many edit her writing. Either that or take a crash course in pronouns and never, never, never end a sentence with a preposition. I believe most will enjoy this book and I just might read more of her work. Always keep in mind this is merely my opinion.
This book is action packed, well written with an awesome premise. I loved the characters and how they developed. I couldn't put it down and did not want it to end. Not a book for those who don't like blood and a bit of guts. I loved the intrigue, suspense and guns etc. great locations
This story grabs your attention from the beginning. The characters are intense individuals and the storyline is captivating. The plight of Claire and Kit is full of action packed moments that keep you turning the pages. Davey was also a wonderful character and friend to both women and fit in perfectly. The ideas in this story of life and science, was quite interesting and the Author did a good job taking us through the phases. Excellent
As I began the book, I was engrossed with the storyline and the characters. As the story progressed, the science fiction theme emerged. I'm not a fan of science fiction, but the concept was interesting, so I went along with it. Everything was going fine until about half way through the book. The storyline begins its climax and its great. However for some reason the author sidelines the danger, and focus on the couple, having them meet the parents and have dinner, even though just a few pages ago, their lives were in extreme danger. This goes on for a while, where the story just begins to drag and you wonder whether you're reading a Nicholas Spark book. Eventually the author gets back on track but its quite winded. It definitely has its moments, but be patient getting to them.
When I was reading it for the first time I remember thinking "is anyone filming it already?" I already know i love Sydney's style of writing. Every scene is so detailed, that you don't have to even close your eyes, you just see what is going on and can almost touch it. For example, you can smell the residue and hear the ringing in your ears after every gunshot described. I can't remember any other book being so addictive, after reading it you're already looking forward to re-reading it again. It's a masterpiece and I can't wait to read more from this wonderful and talented person.
