The Mystery of Jessica Benson edition by CK Laurence Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

My review refers to the Kindle version of this book. This who-done-it kept me involved and wondering, and I recommend it as an enjoyable mystery. However. . .

I was put off by the poor editing. Maybe I'm too sensitive, too critical, but spelling, grammar, and other such errors tend to interfere with my reading enjoyment. I mean, a reference to a strong man (Samson) as "Sampson" was an early alert. That was only the beginning.

Examples:

"She was ions away . . ." instead of "she was eons away . . .
"... mass murder Ted Bundy" as opposed to " mass murderer Ted Bundy ...
"media hoards . . ., rather than "media hordes ...
and the almost hilarious " make sure everything's cop esthetic" instead of "make sure everything's copacetic"

... are just a few of the blunders, and there are several more. These make me wonder if the author (or the editor) actually took time to review the final copy. These things annoy me, and they intefere with my enjoyment of what was otherwise a reasonably good mystery.

I would certainly have rated the book higher, but, as I said, screw-ups like these interfere with my reading enjoyment.

The Mystery of Jessica Benson edition by CK Laurence Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

I found this book to be very enjoyable. Fast paced. Nice twist at the end and I'd certainly recommend it. I'd also cal, it a mans book.
loved the book anyway and will definitely look for more by CKL.
Okay, I read all the reviews and all the comments (some of them peops need to get a life or get over themselves, or both), except the majority of the five-stars. First let me say I never try to figure out whodunnit (that's not to say that suspicions don't bubble to the surface), why cheat myself out of a potentially good tale? Second, it's the telling of the story rather than the resolution, i.e. the trip rather than the destination, and it's the author's story to tell - not mine - in any way and with any language or character quirks or faililngs they see fit.
I don't have to know every single thing about a character up front, you never know everything from the get-go about every person you meet in real life. I don't need to dislike all villains, root for all heroes, and sympathize with all victims; I rarely like or dislike people I meet right from the gate in real life anyway, and it often pans out differently than first impressions. Neither do I need a book that "lifts my spirits with laughs, a good feeling, or message" - those attributes can be wrung out of just about anything if you work on it, and I don't need my beliefs to be suspended by anybody but me.
What I liked best about this tale was that the red herrings were good and solid, you're always left with the thought of, "Well, MAYbe...," even if it turns out your first suspicion was right. I was also struck - and this may sound peculiar to some - by how naturally evocative some of the descriptions of characters' physical gestures were, much different than a simple "she shrugged" or "he pointed". Shows CK really pays attention (and to the naysayers, she definitely knows cops).
I noted some reviewers complained about what they thought was dialogue that was overly crude, one even played the racist card. I've been around police and sheriffs professionally for more than twenty years, and it's always seemed to me that any crude personal or racial comments served them as what those in other fields would refer to as gallows humor (which doesn't mean to say it's all funny, just quirky and designed to relieve tension by switching a paradigm) It has its place, its uses, and its VALUE, and whether it's believable to you as a part of real life or just the author's imagination - it's a STORY, after all, and it's the author's prerogative to make use of them if they fit the situation. You don't believe it, you don't wanna see it used, then don't put it in whatever YOU write.
I note there are a lot of negative comments about editing, which are usually more about proofreading than editing, and I'll cite a few for those who will downgrade an entire book for what are essentially spellcheck faults "duck tape," "cop esthetic" (for copacetic), "...it was a castle, complete with mote," and a couple of sentences which completely baffled me "the little woman averted Karen's eyes," (a job I think best left to Karen), "well I think that's a bunch of horse nipples," - not that horses don't have 'em, it's just that this is the first time they've come to the fore in a book. They're just weird, I choose to gloss over 'em and move ON.
For those who are keeping score, here are the standings (1) Zero paranormal/supernatural/magic components; (2) Frequent profanity; (3) Some nationality slurs (would NOT call them racist); (4) Some romance; (5) Some semi-explicit sex; (6) Some semi-graphic-to-grisly violence; (7) No child or animal abuse; (8) No religious agenda or promotion; (9) Minor homosexual/bisexual characters and behaviors; (10) Grammar and punctuation police, come ahead on I've already left you a few breadcrumbs.
Had a hard time setting this book down. Kept my attention and I had to keep changing my guesses as to who did it. I enjoyed it very much.
I haven't read a murder mystery for awhile. This is one of the best yet. The characters are real and the plot very well thought out. It keeps you guessing to the very end. I recommend it to everyone who likes a fast paced page turner.
I liked the sports/ cops angle of the book. It kept me interested all the way through. I admit, I did not see the way it ended coming. Good job by the author.
I enjoyed this book very much, it was the first I have read by this author. Could have used more editing but story line was good & held I interest to the surprising ending.
Wow! I down loaded this book a while back and just now got to reading it. I wish I would have read it earlier. This book was Sooo good! Right when u think u know who did it, u figure, no it couldn't b that guy...then u think u know again...and your right again, it takes you all the way to the end to read about who did it. And man is it GOOD . I would recommend this book to every who like to read.
